JP, the artist - as seen on TV
JP (John Patrick) has created art for as long as he can remember. Growing up in an academic family of teachers he was encouraged towards a "proper job", going on to a successful career in medical science for 25 years. JP worked around the UK, in a variety of hospitals, most notably being the "JR" in Oxford where he held a senior position. Settling in Oxford for over 10 years and socialising with the creative brains of our next generation, his art came to prominence again. During this period he rapidly went from Student Artist to Art Tutor, taking life-drawing groups and workshops, plus regularly exhibiting around the City.
Art Tutor on Television
JP relocated from Oxford to Cheshire establishing a large art studio on the upper floor of Vernon Mill. In doing so, he became a driving force behind the "VMA" studio-group ("Vernon Mill Artists"). JP cajoled a committed group of ladies of mixed ages and sizes, plus a small number of men, to pose nude for a weekly Life-Drawing group, few of these people had ever posed before, let alone nude! JP's group became popular with local artists and art-teachers alike, some of whom were happy to send their "A-Level" students to JP for additional tutoring and drawing experience. 2005, JP was approached by TV Producers for "How Not To Decorate" (a Lifestyle programme showing multiple series on Channel5) to teach their Celebrity presenters, Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan, how to draw and paint from a reclining nude in the studio, footage to be included in an up-coming programme. JP was happy to be invited and thus filming started. (Few pictures sadly remain from this time). All proceeds from this event were paid to Christie's Cancer Care in Manchester, for whom JP provided a portion of his annual artist income. The popular programme has now been aired several times in the UK (Episode #3.2, Nov 2005) and according to Wikipedia has also aired in South Africa, New Zealand, Estonia, Canada, Poland, Spain, Australia and Albania.
Illness, an artistic hiatus and a re-start
2015-2025 JP encountered significant physical illness which prevented him from being actively creative and keeping an artist's studio. He was forced to step back and accept very early retirement.
- However, from spring, 2026 his medical condition has been described as "complex, but managed" and thus JP is attempting to "bounce back" into a life within the art world. He is active on Facebook and Instagram, is entering multiple exhibitions and is starting a series of Life Drawing Workshops (teaching life drawing to total beginners) in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire.
